Then apply the mosaic effect in Illustrator. Finally slide every other row right half a tile in Illustrator, and you can have a 'brick pattern' mosaic without harming the underlying photo. http://www.digitalartform.com/archives/2009/05/distort_photosh.html (see bottom) Here’s something fun:

First prepare the image by sliding every other row left half a tile in Photoshop.

Then apply the mosaic effect in Illustrator.

Finally slide every other row right half a tile in Illustrator, and you can have a ‘brick pattern’ mosaic without harming the underlying photo.
