Its important to monitor uptime, response time, and check for errors together. With these three combined, you will have a very dependable and user-friendly website. There are actually 3 types of uptime monitoring tools, depending on your needs. There are “Website Monitoring”, “Network Monitoring” and “Server Monitoring” tools. If you have no control on the server whatsoever (e.g. your website is Hosted in a shared environment for 5 bucks per month), a Website Monitoring tool is all you need. However, if you have control on your servers (e.g. your site is Hosted on a dedicated or on a server that you own), you’d be better off with a Network or Server monitoring tool, as it generally has hardware-oriented features (e.g. server performance, temperature, hdd space, etc.)

Another service is AlertFox. AFAIK it is the only service that also offers FREE basic transaction web monitoring.

I think its great. The only issue I have with it is that the free accounts does not include SMS notifications. I worked around that by using a free email2SMS gateway.
