I make my own tests when it comes to video quality. I tested all kinds of players and media centers, VLC, MPC-HC, PowerDVD, Media Player (Windows), XBMC… with a ton of different setting. I used all kinds of video renderers VMR9, EVR, madVR. Capturing the exact same frame every time was tricky but after 2 months of comparing the same frame in different players or same player with different settings I can conclude that:
-	For SD content PowerDVD is a winner, with TrueTheater HD set to the lowest value, TrueTheater Lighting turned off, TrueTheater Motion turned off.
-	For HD content all players with EVR had almost same results (no important differences). When I tested madVR with MPC-HC the video looked a lot clearer then with EVR. But in the actual screenshots all I can see is les artifacts in darker areas. In reality video looks a lot better with madVR, so I think that screenshots don’t actually capture everything on screen as rendered. Why is that?

Does anyone know what the optimal resize settings are in the renderer settings? It uses SoftCubic50 for Luma upsampling and SoftCubic 100 for Chroma resampling, but is it beneficial for image quality to use Lanczos8 instead? What is the difference, really?

I can only suggest to read Doom9 madVR topic (see the link above). I've never encountered such a problem. I also updated download link for the latest MPC Home Cinema build.

Firstly, thanks for the well-written guide, I am keen to try this out. Unfortunately after doing the steps listed the option to select madVR in MPC HC is grayed out for me.
